My Name Is Samuel Wyeth Boyd

Friends of mine own the most beautiful farm in Pennsylvania. In 1995, they had a son. Soon afterward, I was moved to write a song about him and them. I had a hope that he would grow up on that farm and love it as his parents do, I imagine here what it might be like to walk down the dirt road and into the driveway of that farm.

I’m talking years from now; maybe when Sam is 70 years old. You'd meet him in the yard. He'd take you for a walk. It'd be the same walk I've taken many times in these woods with my friends.

My Name is Samuel Wyeth Boyd

my name is samuel wyeth boyd
i was born in ‘95
they say i have my father’s mouth and my mother’s eyes
this is their pennsylvania farm
built with love, built with muscle in their arm
and i’ve lived here all my life

so come and take a walk with me
over rocky earth near ponds, a lake, and streams
where the trees are tall and green
through the grass and through the bush
we’ll take our time so we can stop and look
and listen to what these woods have to say

if you ask me who i am
i’m a cedar in that cedar stand
i’m a bird, i’m flying way up high
you and i’ll walk down a path
cleared by my father while i was on his back
sometimes i giggled and sometimes i napped
see those trees up on that hill
they were planted for me while i was in my mother still
aren’t they wonderful to look at

if you ask me who i am
i’m the beaver who built that beaver dam
i’m a squirrel, i’m climbing out of sight
sometimes when i’m away
i hear it calling me home
it’s like these hills know my name
they say, something’s missing, whenever samuel’s gone'

there’s a little place i know
it’s just up a ways where you can see pavelski road
it always looks to me a little bit like heaven
see all these flowers and all these plants
they were put there by my mother’s loving hands
that’s why you can smell her in the air

if you ask me who i am
i’m a deer, i saw you then ran
i’m a peeper,
you can hear me singing in the night
if you ask me who i am,
just take a look around this land
that’s who i am
i’m so very pleased to meet you
i’m so happy that you’re here

my name is samuel wyeth boyd and i live on this farm
