I Talked to the Mother of Jesus

I know I’m not being very original when I say that I often wonder if anyone 'up there' is really keeping an eye on how things are developing 'down here.' I’ve got to believe that everyone has at one time or another shook their fist at the sky in anger or confusion or desperation. This is me, shaking my fist.

I Talked to the Mother of Jesus

i talked with the mother of jesus very late one night
i told would her about all the things on earth
that i didn't feel were right
like war and poverty,
i talked about the environment too
she said she’d talk to her son and see what he could do

then i talked to a goddess of long ago,
though i didn't catch her name
i told her about my worries and wondered who to blame
surely there must be someone responsible,
i'm just trying to find out who
she said, 'i ain’t the wizard of oz young man,
but i’ll see what i can do'

i want you all to come down here
and take a look around
there’s something you must be missing,
maybe you can't see through the clouds
there's a lot of suffering going on
there's a lot of lonely people too
i don't know how you do it,
how do you let these people believe in you
then i went looking for the buddah,
though i never saw him face-to-face
so i wrote him a long letter about the trials of the human race
well i haven't heard back,
but i expect will in another day or two
maybe the mail’s a little slow up there
and then he’ll see what he can do

then i talked to the great mohammed,
he was sitting on a mountain very still
i figured if anyone had the answer, he surely will
but all i got was a blank stare,
as he gazed out into the sky so blue
he said, 'son, take a walk on back down the mountain
and i'll see what i can do.'

i want you all to come down here
and take a look around
there’s something you must be missing,
maybe you can't see through the clouds
there's a lot of suffering going on
there's a lot of lonely people too
i don't know how you do it,
how do you let these people believe in you
then i realized all these people,
all these thinkers, these prophets, and gods
need to get themselves together and talk,
if they're not too proud
and maybe a miracle would happen
and there would come a day
they’d all take a long vacation
or maybe they’d just go away

i want you all to come down here
and take a look around
there’s something you must be missing,
maybe you can't see through the clouds
there's a lot of suffering going on
there's a lot of lonely people too
i don't know how you do it,
how do you let these people believe in you
