I've take the drive down Jolly Road many times since I wrote this song. I still miss those trees.
Jolly Road
you could smell the pine a mile away
it smelled like some sweet after shave
broken limbs, twisted roots in bright-red clay
they had them piled up high to be hauled away
jolly road, jolly roadthey planted them back in fifty-nine
there’re fifty less trees down jolly road
they’re building a mini-mart i am told
there’re fifty less trees down jolly road
a hundred little trees in ten straight lines
they could have planted oak but they planted pine
they probably thought they’d stand until the end of time
jolly road, jolly roadas i walked by i heard a bird say
there’re fifty less trees down jolly road
they’re building a mini-mart i am told
there’re fifty less trees down jolly road
there’s a lot more wind and a lot less shade
there’s a lot less shelter and a lot more rain
and there were a lot more trees here yesterday
when i was a boy about nine or ten
i found that trees were some of my best friends
trees grow tall and boys become men
but i feel the same now as i did back then
jolly road, jolly road
there’re fifty less trees down jolly road
they’re building a mini-mart i am told
there’re fifty less trees down jolly road
